obscure medieval fandom fanfic. woot.
It's finally been done. Song of Roland officially has fanfic. woot. OH, if my profs could see me now...XD Although this is primarily based on the Chanson de Roland, it would be only fair to say that it is also something of an amalgamation of the traditions of several chansons de geste, most notably the Chanson d’Aspremont and La Chevalerie d’Ogier de Danemarche. It might also have some elements of Middle English Charlemagne romances, especially Sege of Melayne, at least in terms of characterization. Of course, the usual warning: SLASH, all slash, lots of slash. (And UST, gotta love the UST.) Even the clerics are slashy. If that bothers you, go away. >:-) ( Roland wants Olivier, Ogier doesn't want to get involved, Turpin's already too involved, and Naimes just sits back and wonders at all of them. ) Current Mood: accomplishedCurrent Music: "As Long As You're Mine," Wicked | | Thursday, February 16th, 2006 | | 2:37 pm |
Hum, it's been a while. Suffice to say, I've been quite busy...Let's take Carrie's route and make a list: 1.) Did an overly-erudite, nerve-racking colloquium talk on my favorite medieval fighting archbishop (that is to say, Turpin). Went over rather well, and I now have the one thing my life lacked--RESPECT! (oh wait...never mind, still don't have that...;-)) 2.) Am fighting in full armor now in kendo--it's scary, and quite heavy, and it looks like this. Except not in white. 'Cause white bogu is for pussies like Luke Skywalker. 3.) Just finished an awesomely fun production of Romeo and Juliet at Risley, the artsy dorm on campus. I was Benvolio, and me and Mercutio were totally yaoi (except that we're both girls, so does that make us yuri...?) Anyway, I have pics up from that on my facebook page and Baku has a bunch here. Oh, and I also did the costumes, which explains their utter coolness. XD I am in love with Tybalt's doublet, Lady Capulet has slept with every other character, and Benvolio is only around so that the other characters can have someone to sexually assault on stage--these are the life lessons I've learned from this production. <3 <3 <3 4.) Oh yeah...so I was in Japan. And it was cool. What else can I say in two lines of text? If you want to know about my trip, ask me in person and make sure you have three hours free to hear all the details. :-D Here are some photos Baku took in Kyoto. Besides that, the only thing I have to add is that doujinshi is LOVE. <3 So yeah, things are good. And it's relaly warm here in Ithaca. And I'm soooo busy!! But I'm hoping to get to NYC for Spring Break and maybe see Pam, if she wants to. Oh, and I'm officially a History major! Hell yeah!! | | Tuesday, December 13th, 2005 | | 11:14 pm |
Is the Chanson de Roland really a hotbed of yaoi...? >:-D
So recently we were supposed to write a story for French class, right? and I write a fanfic-ish thing using the characters from Chanson de Roland, about Turpin and Roland and Charlemagne, right, so far so good. And I try really hard not to make it yaoi or even hinting at shounen-ai (despite all the shounen-ai in the original (!!!)), because that’s just good policy when you’re actually turning something in for a grade. So I get it back, and the prof (who’s a frustratingly attractive Frenchman, by the way) writes in the margin “Que voulez-vous dire?!” [“What do you mean to say?!”], as if I was being all shamelessly yaoi and Turpin was screwing Roland senseless in a church or something...!!! *looks innocent* I didn’t even think I was /suggesting/ anything!! Honest! All I said was that Roland was a young man who was “assez charmant” and that Turpin could never stay angry with him for long! Does that sound like the typical example of a sizzling yaoi sentence...?! XD XD So anyway, when I do the re-write of the story to turn in, I reply to his comment (in English, since I couldn’t really find the words in French...*sweatdrop*) and say, “You can interpret it however you like, but remember, I didn’t say it...! :-)” and when I get my paper back, he’s written underneath that, “Nous nous sommes compris!” [“We understand each other!”], as if we’re accomplices in yaoi-ness or something. XD XD XD I can’t help but wonder if he’s in a secret yaoi relationship or something, because if I was a guy, I don’t think I would jump to conclusions about the medieval dudes in my students’ fanficcy stories...Now, a yaoi girl, on the other hand, I definitely would have expected to see something there, but my male teacher?! *sheesh* And I thought I was being all discrete and stuff... All of this is beside the point, anyway, ‘cause everyone knows that Roland/Olivier is the OTP for Chanson de Roland, not Turpin/Roland. Turpin is an archbishop for cryin’ out loud...Admittedly, he is the most bad-ass guy in the Chanson, and I’m not saying he didn’t get any action, because I think it’s pretty clear that if you’re a priest and you have no moral qualms about whacking about a billion Saracens with a sword, you won’t have many pangs of guilt at hooking up with your soldier buddies, but I’ve got to stop slashing these medieval clerics or I’ll find myself with a one-way ticket to hell...did Dante have a circle for yaoi girls? I don’t believe he did. ;-D BTW, if anyone’s interested, I added some Les Mis stuff, some Notre-Dame de Paris stuff, some French Rev stuff, some Ros/Guil stuff, and some other stuff fairly recently to my deviantArt gallery ( http://cillabub.deviantart.com/). Reddo! Burakku!
The Japanese Blue Cast Recording of Les Miserables is awesome. That's all I have to say today, and it's something I've been contemplating for a while. I got the CDs a few months ago via eBay, and my poor Japanese-speaking friends have been getting many translation requests since then...They also have some pictures of the cast in the libretto booklet (which is unfortunately written in kanji and not in romanji, so I can't even begin to read the lyrics), and they're so odd-looking, being Japanese people dressed in old French clothes (rather like my boyfriend...see preceding entry). Enjolras (or should I say, "Annzyorurasu," as I am told his name translates phonetically into Japanese) is fairly hot, at least. Happily, he didn't have to wear a blond wig for the role or anything. Marius ("Mariusu") looks like a mincing, prancing little twit, which is perfect. And Kaho Shimada looks like, well, like Kaho Shimada. And Combeferre ("Konnbufe-ru") has glasses, yes, I kid you not. And while we're talking about the silly katakana "phoneticizations" of French names, allow me to dwell on the Friends of the ABC: "Fuii" (Feuilly), "Ku-ruferakku" (Courfeyrac), "Gurannte-ru" (Grantaire), and my personal favorites, "Zyori" (Joly), "Re-guru" (Lesgle), and "Zyann Buruve-ru" (J. Prouvaire). The Engrish involved in "Red & Black" is pretty funny, since although the entire song is sung in Japanese, like the rest of the recording, the words "red" and "black" are left in English, and are spelled and pronounced "Reddo" and "Burakku." And nothing, my friends, is as inspiring as hearing Annzyorurasu singing, "Reddo atsuki chisio/Burakku noroi no kako/Reddo yoake no iro/burakku yoruno owari!" Nor is anything as much of a downer as Gaburo-syu breaking in and saying, "Ramaruku syougunn ha sinnda" ["General Lamarque is dead"]. XD | | Friday, April 22nd, 2005 | | 4:42 pm |
Hm, it's been a while. Huh. I guess it’s been a little while since I updated…Oh well, that’s what I get for having a real life. I’ve been reading lots of Middle English, listening to lots of what I call F-pop (cheesy French pop/dance music, akin to J-pop for those of you in the know). Haven’t been drawing too much, due to the staggering amount of creative energy that my costume design course saps out of me. I did draw my latest favorite literary character, Archbishop Turpin of the medieval Charlemagne romance cycle (too bad there’s no fan following, although I find that lots of people who like slash have read Song of Roland, unsurprisingly). Other than that, I have a crapload of unfinished drawings (ie, uncolored). So…lazy. In other news, I’m experiencing something of a resurgence in Les Mis interest, as I do every few months. I recently bought (on eBay, naturally) the Japanese Blue Cast Recording of the musical (in Japanese, of course, which I don’t know…). It is “Super-Cool,” as Mr. Orange puts it in Reservoir Dogs. P.S.—Japanese is a really angry-sounding language. Baku, if you’re reading this, c’mon, you know it’s true. I want to draw a Les Mis picture. We’ll see…I haven’t drawn Combeferre in what feels like years. I feel like watching Rosencrantz today…maybe Meredith will watch it with me so we can giggle over how yaoi they are. *g* That’s another thing I want to draw a picture for, since I just saw a black-box production of it last weekend here at Cornell. I also want Papa John’s…Down with the Meal Plan! and Big Red Bucks! Speaking of bad F-pop, I’m currently listening to a song called “Dessine-moi un Mouton,” named after a line in Le Petit Prince, which we’re reading in French. The book’s pretty cool, but a little bizarre. I want to draw the Petit Prince, too. Sensing a trend here? And speaking of the Petit Prince, I get to go to Britain and France with my parents on their vacation this summer! So cool! I’m afraid I’m going to spend so much money in Paris, though…buying books and CDs and stuff…and manga. Can’t forget all the manga in French that I plan on buying. >:-) *evil cackle* Almost forgot…Speaking of Les Mis, Baku and I went to a costume ball a few weeks ago, and I got to dress him up. All I could cobble together at the last minute (since I generally don’t stock men’s period clothing) was an approximation of Les Mis/late 18th century clothing. So he ended up looking like Combeferre, to make a long story short. Japanese Combeferre. :-D Aren’t we cute? :-)
Time to go draw one of the many things I want to draw…Or, better yet, finish one of the pictures I’m halfway through…Until next time, mes amis, it’s Kristina signing off from not-so-chilly Cornell. Current Mood: lazyCurrent Music: F-pop | | Monday, December 13th, 2004 | | 2:56 am |
Heh. Suddenly had an inclination to finish something, so I finished a Rosencrantz and Guildstern Are Dead fanfic (which I'd already posted part of in a very early post in this journal--PS, thanks to those who commented on it :-)). If you're not nice, I'll tell you how it ends... ( hint: THEY DIE. )I've re-posted the first part as well, so it forms some kind of cohesive whole. Be warned for slash, naturally, since it is R & G. Pretty Jehan, etc.
Look! I drew medieval Muse Jehan Prouvaire! And he looks like a girl...! [surprise, surprise] Of course, the only reason I was sufficiently inspired to draw anything was that I am in the middle of finals week (I only draw when under pressure--ie, when I have more pressing things to be doing than drawing). So that sucks. But I go home on Friday, and I am looking forward to it (I want to see my kitties!!!), but I'm going to miss everybody here (although I won't miss the building itself). I won't miss the random snow showers either--it's going to be nice and warm in Florida. :-) I'm also going to miss my scanner, so don't expect to see any more artwork until late January, because even though I could be producing it like mad, I'll have no way to scan it. Just saw Zhang Yimou's movie Hero, with Jet Li. It was very pretty--awesome use of color, and they must have used every bolt of chiffon in China to produce the gorgeous costumes. And call me petty, but the hot Asian guys in it didn't hurt its appeal. ;-D Oh, and as if you wanted to see yet another of my Renaissance costumes, here's another of Baku's photos of me in the dorm on Halloween--I call it "Portrait with Corn Pops and Gatorade." :-) Current Mood: intimidatedCurrent Music: "Bless the Lord"--Godspell | | Thursday, December 2nd, 2004 | | 2:14 pm |

Some of you might appreciate this article (courtesy of the Cornell Daily Sun), or some of you might just feel that you're being personally attacked...if you are one of the latter, it might be time to seek help. ;-) But at the very least, you might catch the ultimate irony of my posting this article on my livejournal. what's been going on lately??
whew...Been a long semester. Now that Thanksgiving break's almost here, I thought it might be about time for my "bi-annual" update...;-D It's not snowing yet (not even close), I'm working on a new anime convention costume (the sewing machine's working again! Boo-yah!), I have a boyfriend (*gasp*), and I'm taking a costume design course next semester (XD XD XD XD). Oh yeah, and only 23 days till Return of the King Extended Edition. In further detail to the above-mentioned: NOT SNOWING, NEW ANIME COSTUME, and ME & BAKU (a.k.a., The Boyfriend ;-)). I finally got a better photo taken of one of my costumes, when I wore it on Halloween (I even wore it in the dining hall...*sigh* That was interesting, esp. considering that the train of the under-dress drags for about a foot behind me on the ground.). I love Baku's black-and-white camera. :-) I'm working on a drawing on Combeferre (so what's new?), but this one's even bloodier than usual. And he has bags under his eyes that are about equivalent to the ones beneath my own eyes. When I get that picture into any semblance of completeness (which should be within the next couple of days), I'll post the link here. I'm really liking it so far...*cackles madly and with significant bloodlust* Oh, and BTW, Carrie--no, he's not a vampire. XD Hm, I guess not as much is going on here as I had thought...If I think of anything else, I'll post. :-) Current Mood: artisticCurrent Music: "I'd Do Anything"--Oliver! | | Monday, September 6th, 2004 | | 9:31 pm |
well now.
Reporting live from Cornell, 9:32 P.M. Eastern Standard Time. Here are our top stories tonight: I realized recently that a Billy Joel song called "Summer, Highland Falls" from the album Turnstiles is awesome for Rosencrantz..., particularly when a Guildenstern POV is assumed. Exhibit A (the lyrics): They say that these are not the best of times, But they're the only times I've ever known, And I believe there is a time for meditation in cathedrals of our own. Now I have seen that sad surrender in my lover's eyes, And I can only stand apart and sympathize. For we are always what our situations hand us... It's either sadness or euphoria. And so we argue and we compromise, and realize that nothing's ever changed, For all our mutual experience, our separate conclusions are the same. Now we are forced to recognize our inhumanity, Our reason co-exists with our insanity. And though we choose between reality and madness... It's either sadness or euphoria. How thoughtlessly we dissipate our energies Perhaps we don't fulfill each other's fantasies. And so we'll stand upon the ledges of our lives, With our respective similarities... It's either sadness or euphoria. In other news tonight: beginning-level French class is boring and redundant, Michael-from-England-who-lives-upstairs has the coolest accent, and "We Didn't Go to Harvard" (sung by the a cappella group "Cayuga's Waiters" to the tune of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire") should have been Cornell's alma mater. Now let's go to weather: My parents braved Hurricane Frances last weekend by merely sitting in the house with our cats. No boarding-up of windows, no stocking up on canned food, no evacuation, no local shelter, and now, no electricity. But everyone's okay, so it's all good, I suppose. In education news: I am taking no math or science courses this semester, praise God. My schedule consists of five classes: Intro. to Classical Fencing, Intro. to Western Civilization, French, Renaissance & Baroque art history, and a writing seminar comparing Hamlet and R&G Are Dead. I want to make a T-shirt featuring one of my drawings to wear to the latter. :-) And now, a late-breaking story: Shakespeare's sonnets rock my world. I really felt that I was reading modern English as I read them, they flow so well. And they're cute and more than a little slashy. That's all for now. Tune in later for more updates. Just kinda amused that the song "La Resistance" on the South Park soundtrack is a total take-off on Les Mis's "One Day More." But in other news--leaving for college this coming Sunday. We'll see how this big 4-year experiment goes... Not to get off topic, but I think I am actually going to be forced to see "Prisoner of Azkaban." Besides the fact that it has Gary Oldman (half of my Much Older Crush Duo, the other half being Tim Roth, who my mom insists is not hot...*sigh*), I think I'm actually starting to give a shit about the characters themselves. Or at least Remus and Sirius (see proof of this, for instance)...I'm still not really interested in every little twist in Harry's personal life. But at least now I'm willing to give him half a chance, I suppose because he has the coolest godfather ever. ;-) Current Mood: amusedCurrent Music: "Christmastime in Hell"--South Park | | Saturday, July 17th, 2004 | | 11:42 am |
The actual point of this post is to see if I can link to a picture without fucking it up. *sigh* It might or might not work. ( Read more... )PS-- I have begun to notice Reservoir Dogs having an adverse effect on my adult language usage, ie-- it makes me cuss a lot. I'm just a victim of society. *sigh* ;-D | | Wednesday, May 5th, 2004 | | 6:12 pm |
ugh...
IB tests driving me mad...Speaking of mad, King Lear is an excellent play. Go out and read now, if you haven't already. Have some 'Ferre drabble, if you would like it: **************** "Is there a man here who goes by the name of Enjolras?" The gendarme captain was poised for action, the deep echo of his Bretagne accent rattling the dust from the ceiling beams of the back room. Behind him, crowding in the doorway with the scrambling excitement of a pack of hounds, his troop had weapons at hand. In the weightlessly nauseating silence of that impossible moment, Combeferre swallowed every bitter thought he'd ever had, every year he'd spent longing after a man whose heart was already laid bare upon an unapproachable altar. He stepped forward stiffly. "I am he." ***************** 100 words. I should go write something substantial. Monk Combeferre is bothering me to tell his story, a la dying Hamlet, except more whiny and annoying--"Cilla, report me and my cause aright to the yet-unknowing world..." ;-) | | Thursday, April 22nd, 2004 | | 3:14 pm |
Josh Groban!!!!
My chorus is singing backup for Josh Groban tomorrow, right here in sunny West Palm Beach, FL! *sighs fangirlishly* He's so sexy...looks like my Combeferre too, only no glasses. XD XD XD If I meet him, I shall refrain from telling him that. *sweatdrop* | | Tuesday, March 30th, 2004 | | 9:45 pm |
more drabble.
Uh oh...Predator!Enjolras emerges as a powerful sexual presence. *sweatdrop* ******************** "Enjolras, don't be an idiot." Combeferre backed away fluidly, his small stature giving him the nimbleness to escape. "Please." "Why can't I be an idiot sometimes? Everyone else gets to be one constantly." Enjolras advanced on him, his eyes glittering almost aqua in the odd light. Combeferre felt the press of the wall against his back. "This isn't like you, Enjolras." He had the animal sensation of being trapped. "No, it isn't," his companion agreed, drawing nearer to the cornered young man. "But is it possible that I'm not the man you thought I was?" Combeferre squeezed his eyes shut. ******************** 100 words | | Wednesday, March 10th, 2004 | | 5:20 pm |
drabble
Hm, drabbles are harder to write than I would've thought. I really should've written a whole fanfic for Jehan/Combeferre/Enjolras, which turns out to be a somewhat angsty love triangle. But here we go. * * * * * * * * * * Enjolras trembled, an intense jealousy mounting as he scanned the hastily scrawled sonnet and recognized the subject of the apostrophe. Jehan waited anxiously, watching Enjolras’s dangerously blank expression. “Well, what do you think of it? You’re his best friend—will he like it? Will he like me?” “Burn it.” Enjolras flung the paper back at the poet and turned on his heel. Jehan watched his poem flutter to the floorboards, uncomprehending. If Enjolras said Combeferre wouldn’t like it, he must be right, but he needn’t be so rude about it. A moment later, the realization suddenly hit him. Oh dear. * * * * * * * * * * 100 words. | | 1:51 pm |
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Preciously Adorable.
Yes, it's true. They're so slow, but Ros&Guil are very huggable. They're also totally slashable, even if Guildenstern (who I played when we performed parts of Ros&Guil Are Dead for a school project) is something of an SOB. Watching the movie version with Gary Oldman (who makes such a beautifully clueless Rosencrantz) and Tim Roth (the typical irritable Guildenstern with the hooded eyes) inspired me to write some fanfic for the little buggers. So here's some partially movie-verse, partially book-verse, partially just odd work-in-progress fanfic from Guildenstern's POV...since I can't even imagine writing for the Rosencrantz POV. Maybe later. ( Ambushed by a Grotesque ) |
